Lovely, Dark and Deep The woods are a site of the unknown, one that simultaneously provokes anxiety and wonder. The woods conjure images of Hansel and Gretel, and axe murderers, of coyotes, and caterpillars. The woods run thick and wild alongside some of our country’s busiest highways. They border neighborhoods and big-box stores and strip malls. Standing at the edge of the woods I am apprehensive of the dangers and mysteries that lurk within. My anxiety rises. But it occurs to me that we may represent the biggest danger — by interfering with the wild and untamed, greedily encroaching upon it.
